A PU paint formula is a two-pack polyurethane system: a polyol part with pigment and a hardener part with isocyanate. It gives a hard, glossy, weather-resistant film. Here you will find the groups, the mixing order and the checks for two pack PU topcoat. The mix ratio must be followed exactly.

Polyurethane paint formulation and acrylic polyol PU formula follow the same two-pack idea.

We tune formulas with you for your raw materials, grade and climate, and support your lab trials and scale-up to plant batches. For polyurethane coating systems formulas, formulation development and technology transfer are supported by IPCS (Indian Paints Consulting Service).

Applications of PU Paint Formula

PU is chosen where gloss, weather and abrasion resistance matter.

  • Industrial and machinery topcoats
  • Vehicles and metal furniture
  • Wood finishes
  • Protective topcoat over epoxy

The exact percentages depend on your raw materials, target grade and local standard, so we set them with you through formulation consultancy and confirm them in your lab. This page shows which groups go in, in what order and how to check the result.

Mixing order for pu paint batches

  1. Charge polyol, solvent and pigment into the disperser vessel
  2. Disperse to the target fineness in a mill if required
  3. Check moisture in the base, because isocyanate reacts with water
  4. Adjust viscosity and fill the base part
  5. Fill the hardener part in its own sealed pack
  6. Pack as a kit and label with the mix ratio and pot life

Quality targets for pu paint

  • Fineness of grind
  • Viscosity
  • Moisture in the base
  • Mix ratio check
  • Pot life after mixing
  • Gloss and hardness after cure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PU paint formula with percentage?

Exact percentages depend on your polyol and hardener, so we set them with you through formulation consultancy.

What is a polyurethane paint polyol and isocyanate ratio?

The ratio is set by the chemistry of the polyol and the isocyanate, and it must be followed exactly. The data sheet of each resin gives the ratio.

How to make PU topcoat?

Disperse pigment in the polyol with dry solvent, adjust viscosity and fill the base. Pack the isocyanate hardener separately.

What is an acrylic polyol PU formula?

It uses an acrylic polyol as the base, which gives good gloss and weather resistance, with an isocyanate hardener.

What is a two pack PU topcoat recipe?

It is the formula plus the mixing order and checks.
