An emulsion paint formula is the recipe that combines binder, pigment, filler, water and additives into a stable, washable wall paint. Here you will find the groups in the formula, how they are mixed and which quality targets to check, so you can plan a first trial with confidence.
Acrylic emulsion paint formulation follows the same structure for every grade. Economy, standard and premium paints differ in binder quality, titanium dioxide level and filler level.
We tune formulas with you for your raw materials, grade and climate, and support your lab trials and scale-up to plant batches. IPCS (Indian Paints Consulting Service) develops and transfers formulations, and supports interior and exterior emulsion paint formulas from lab trials to plant batches.
Applications of Emulsion Paint Formula
Emulsion paint is the main product of most paint factories.
- Interior walls and ceilings
- Exterior walls
- Economy, standard and premium grades
- Base paint for tinting
Formula variations for emulsion paint
| Grade | What changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | More filler, vinyl-acrylic binder, less TiO2 | Rental and low-cost interior jobs |
| Standard | Balanced binder, TiO2 and filler | General interior use |
| Premium | Pure acrylic binder, higher TiO2, better scrub resistance | Premium interior and exterior |
Ingredients used in emulsion paint formulas
| Group | Role in the formula | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Binder emulsion | Forms the film and holds everything together | Acrylic, vinyl-acrylic, VAE |
| White pigment | Hiding and whiteness | Rutile titanium dioxide |
| Fillers | Body, sheen control and lower cost | Calcium carbonate, talc, clay |
| Dispersant and wetting agent | Spreads pigment and filler | Polyacrylate types |
| Thickener | Body, flow and sag control | HEC, HEUR, HASE |
| Defoamer, preservative, coalescent | Foam control, can protection, film formation | Chosen by binder |
| Water | Carrier | Clean water |
Mixing order for emulsion paint batches
- Charge water, dispersant and wetting agent into the disperser vessel and start at low speed
- Add titanium dioxide and fillers into the vortex at the rate the liquid absorbs them
- Grind at high speed for about 20 minutes and check fineness on a Hegman gauge
- Reduce speed and add binder emulsion, defoamer and thickener
- Add preservative, then adjust pH and viscosity in small steps
- Filter the batch and take a sample for the final checks
Quality targets for emulsion paint
- Viscosity against the approved batch
- Fineness of grind on a Hegman gauge
- pH and solids
- Hiding power and colour
- Scrub and wash resistance
- Heat-age stability of a retained sample
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an emulsion paint formula with percentage?
A formula lists each group by percentage. Exact percentages depend on your raw materials and target grade, so we set them with you through formulation consultancy. Here you will find the groups and the order of mixing.
How to make emulsion paint formula for the first time?
Start with a short trial in the lab, using the groups in the table and the mixing order above. Check fineness, viscosity and pH, then scale up in steps.
What is an emulsion paint formula for small scale?
The groups are the same at any scale. A small plant can start with one grade and one binder and add grades as sales grow.
What is an emulsion paint recipe?
A recipe is the formula plus the mixing order and checks. The steps above show the order.
What does PVC mean in emulsion paint?
Pigment volume concentration is the share of the dry film that is pigment and filler. Gloss paints are low in PVC and flat paints are high. Higher PVC raises hiding but usually lowers scrub resistance.
What is emulsion paint ingredients percentage for a premium grade?
Premium grades use more binder and titanium dioxide, but the exact percentage depends on the raw materials and target. We set it in consultation.
