Paint Thickeners

HEC, HASE and HEUR: how each changes viscosity, sag and spatter.

Choosing Paint Thickeners? Specification, supplier and storage decide cost and quality.

ISO 9001:2015 Certified · 18+ Years · 400+ Clients · 6+ Countries

Paint thickeners give body so the paint stays in the can without settling, flows well off the brush or roller and does not sag on the wall. HEC, HEUR and HASE are the common types in emulsion paint. Here you will find how each behaves and how to fix low viscosity.

A rheology modifier for paint controls how the paint flows at rest, during stirring and during application.

We help you choose grades and suppliers, set simple receiving checks and keep your formula stable from lot to lot. IPCS (Indian Paints Consulting Service) offers raw material selection and sourcing guidance, including advice on paint thickeners.

Paint Thickeners overview

Thickeners are designed to give high viscosity at low shear, as in the can, and lower viscosity at high shear, as when brushing. Associative types such as HEUR mainly build high and medium shear viscosity, which helps with spatter and brush drag.

HEC thickener for paint is a cellulose ether that builds body in the can. A HEUR thickener gives good film build, levelling and reduced spatter. HASE swells when the pH is raised, so it needs a base to thicken.

Applications of Paint Thickeners

How to fix low viscosity in paint: check the dose, the pH and any extra water first.

✓Primers and sealers
✓Distemper pastes
✓Texture and tinted paints

Choosing paint thickeners for a paint formulation

What to compare

  • Types of thickeners used in emulsion paint: match to the target flow
  • HEC vs HEUR vs HASE thickener: HEC for body, HEUR for flow and levelling, HASE for pH-controlled thickening
  • Water resistance and scrub resistance
  • Effect on tinting
  • Cost in use

Quality checks on receipt

  • Viscosity of the finished batch
  • pH, especially for HASE
  • Compare with the approved batch

Storage and handling

Store in closed containers at moderate temperature, and keep powders dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the types of thickeners used in emulsion paint?

Cellulosic thickeners such as HEC, associative thickeners such as HEUR and alkali-swellable thickeners such as HASE.

What is HEC vs HEUR vs HASE thickener?

HEC builds body, HEUR improves film build, levelling and spatter but has weaker sag resistance, and HASE thickens when the pH is raised.

How to fix low viscosity in paint?

Check the thickener dose, the pH for HASE types and whether extra water was added. Then adjust in small steps.

What is a rheology modifier for paint?

It is a thickener that controls how paint flows at rest and during use.

Why does my paint spatter on the roller?

Spatter is linked to the thickener type. HEUR reduces spatter and is often used with other types to balance flow.
